Reimagining Literacy Support for a Generation Left Behind
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, student reading performance in California—and nationwide—has dropped significantly. According to the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 29% of California’s 4th graders and 30% of 8th graders are reading at or above the proficient level.
Even more concerning, California’s 4th grade reading scores (233) fall 4 points below the national average (237), with over 37% of students reading below the basic level. Among 8th graders, 33% are also reading below basic, matching national struggles. These are some of the lowest scores recorded in decades.
These results reveal that traditional systems alone are not meeting the needs of all students—especially those disproportionately affected by disrupted learning. To bridge this gap, we must create alternative learning centers that focus on personalized literacy support, community-driven mentorship, and innovative teaching strategies. Now more than ever, reimagining how we support readers is not just helpful—it’s essential.
